Apply to be Faculty Affiliate

The Environmental Humanities Program relies on the contributions of faculty to support our mission to train the next generation of environmental thinkers and leaders towards building more just and equitable environmental futures.

We offer two tiers of faculty participation based on engagement with the program: 

Core faculty make substantial and significant contributions to the success of our students, and the vision of the EH program. Expectations for core faculty include:

  • Applying to teach graduate courses for the program, or cross-list from their appointed departments
  • Attending faculty meetings twice/year
  • Serving on graduate students’ supervisory committees in chair or member roles, according to EH’s current supervisory committee policy
  • Serving on at least one program committee/year, e.g., graduate admissions committee, EH Executive Committee, Utah Award in EH committee, fellowship application review, student seminar paper award review, or EH Research Interest Group leader

Core faculty are featured on our faculty website page and are the subject of occasional in-depth features.

Note: The EH Executive Committee is comprised of the director of EH; faculty who have inter-college agreements or MOUs with EH; and a selection of core faculty based on interest or nomination from a current EH Executive Committee member.

Affiliate faculty provide peripheral yet integral support to the EH program through:

  • Serving on student supervisory committees (according to EH’s current supervisory committee policy)
  • Attending one or more EH events each year
  • Providing service on one committee every three years
  • Being visible scholars on our faculty page with their interests in environmental humanities research or teaching expertise listed

Both core and affiliate members commit to three-year terms and are welcome to reapply for renewal indefinitely. The EH director reviews affiliate faculty status each year in May.

Whether core or affiliate, benefits of faculty participation include networking and collaboration, promotion of research and celebration of success across our communication channels, working with motivated and engaged graduate students, professional development opportunities, and notification of campus and external events.

All tenured, tenure-track, and full-time career-line faculty at the University of Utah are eligible to apply for either EH faculty tier. Applications can be submitted any time and will be reviewed regularly to support diversity of representation across academic departments, faculty rank, and areas of specialization.

Note: We will consider postdocs for the affiliate faculty tier on a case-by-case basis. Please contact Director Dr. Danielle Endres.

Please submit the following information using the apply button below.

  1. Your current curriculum vitae
  2. A brief statement no more than 500 words explaining how your scholarly research and teaching relates to the EH Program’s mission as well as what you hope to bring to, and gain from, affiliation with the EH Program
  3. 1-5 keywords to indicate your areas of specialization (for faculty website page)
  4. Tick the box to indicate core or affiliate level.
