Nic Apodaca receives FLAS in Portuguese
Nic Apodoca, second-year EH student, was awarded a Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) for Portuguese from the University of Utah’s Center for Latin American Studies for summer 2019 and the 2019-20 academic term. Nic studied Portuguese in Brazil this summer, and is enrolled in intensive language and cultural studies during the 19/20 academic terms.
Nic says "I'm interested in the changing cultural role that nature has played in South America and the Mediterranean from pre-colonization to modern day. Intensive Portuguese study and cultural immersion will better allow me to research and better comprehend the complex relationship Brazil has with its vast forests and mountains. I intend to study specifically how perceptions of nature evolved during the 20th century through literature, so linguistic aptitude is essential."
In September of 2018, the University of Utah, in partnership with BYU, was awarded $6.8 million from the US Dept of Education to support international education and language study over the next four years. The Title VI National Resource Center and Foreign Language and Area Studies grants provide funding directly to the Center for Latin American Studies, Asia Center and their BYU counterparts and will earmark $4.6 million for student scholarships.
