Community-Engaged Learning Coursework - Call for Proposals
The Environmental Humanities Graduate Program is inviting University of Utah faculty to develop a graduate-level, community engaged-learning class focused on environmental justice, climate justice and environmental racism from a humanities perspective. This effort is supported by a significant grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, with the aim to make “community engaged learning the centerpiece of an environmental justice and leadership pathway for underrepresented students.” The proposed course is critical to this effort.
Interested faculty should submit a one-page application outlining their ideas for
such a class, listing the community partners with whom they might collaborate, and
describing the expected outcomes for students. Please also discuss previous successful
community engaged learning initiatives.
The course will first be offered in 2021/22 and then again in 2022/23, semester to be determined. The Environmental Humanities Graduate Program provides $15,000 to the faculty member’s home department for course buyouts covering the development and teaching (twice) of the class. We strongly urge interested faculty to discuss this opportunity with their department chair before submitting an application to make sure buyouts will be granted.
The application and a current CV are due to Katharina Gerstenberger, Interim Director of Environmental Humanities, by Friday, October 9. Please direct any questions you might have to katharina.gerstenberger@utah.edu.
