Anne Whitehouse places in writing contest, receives Both summer AND 20/21 FLAS
Anne Whitehouse, rising second-year EH student recently won third place in Sejong Cultural Society’s 2020 Writing Competition. Anne analyzed Hwang Sun-won’s Cranes, a Korean short story by focusing on landscape and the environment in the text.
Anne studies the intersection of the environmental humanities and Korean culture and language. In her own words:
My scholarly endeavors focus on studying Korean literature and culture in the context of environmental issues and ecological relationships. My master’s thesis research examines the complicated and myriad relationships humans have with urban rivers through ecocritical analysis of Korean literary texts about the Cheonggye Stream (청계천) in Seoul.
She received a Foreign Languages Area Studies (FLAS) scholarship for a summer of study in Korea and she has deftly pivoted to study Korean remotely via Middlebury Language Schools. Additionally, in June, she was awarded a FLAS from the Asia Center for the 2020/21 academic year as well. As a graduate fellow, she will continue her study of Korean language and enroll in an Area Studies course each semester, on top of her coursework in Environmental Humanities. Congratulations, Anne!
