An Evening with Mary Dickson
The Continuing Legacy of U.S. Nuclear Weapons
Join the University of Utah Environmental Humanities Program on October 24, 2024, at 6:00 PM in Gould Auditorium for a public talk by Fall 2024 Community Practitioner-in-Residence, Mary Dickson, an award-winning writer, downwinder, and internationally recognized advocate. A thyroid cancer survivor and outspoken voice for downwinders, Mary has spent decades raising awareness about the devastating impact of nuclear weapons testing in Utah and fighting for justice for those affected.
In this talk, Mary will share her personal story as a downwinder and examine the ongoing legacy of U.S. nuclear weapons activities, with a focus on the human toll in Utah, one of the states hardest hit by radioactive fallout. She will also discuss the importance of supporting the expansion of the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA), which currently excludes many affected communities, including those in Northern Utah.
As the threats of resumed nuclear testing emerge and international conversations about the use of nuclear weapons continue, Mary's voice stands as a powerful reminder of the need for accountability and reparations. This free event is an important opportunity to hear directly from a survivor and advocate. Refreshments will be provided. Register here.
